Genesis Chapter 11: THE DISPERSION OF
THE NATIONS AND LANGUAGES PART 2
Introduction:
In this chapter God sees that man is following his own desires and not the
commandments that He had told Noah and his family to do. Then being displeased
with man God disperses them in a very universal way.
1.And the whole earth
was of one of one language, and of one speech. 2. And it came to pass, as they
journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and
they dwelt there. 3. And they said one to another, “Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.”
And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 4. And they said,
“Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven;
and let us make us a name, let we be scattered abroad upon the face of the
whole earth.” 5. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower,
which the children of men builded. 6. And the Lord said, “Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language;
and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be restrained from them, which
they have imagined to do.(9:19, Ps. 2:1). Go to, Let us go down, and here
confound their language, that they may not understand one another speech.”8.
So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth:
and they left off to build the city. (Luke 1:51) 9. Therefore is the name of it
called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the
earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all
the earth.
The people decided to not spread themselves throughout the earth and to build a very high tower as a tribute to man’s accomplishments. This was not God’s commandment to Noah and God was displeased. In vs. 6 God said “Let us go down…..” This does not mean that He actually came down but that He took action on man to separate them so that they would go to develop their own nations in their own tongues. The building of the tower stopped because the communication was very confounding.
10. These are the
generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad, two years
after the flood: 11. And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years,
and begat sons and daughters. 12. Arphaxad live five and thirty years, and
begat Salah: 13. And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three
years, and begat sons and daughters. 14. And Salah lived thirty years, and
begat Eber: 15. And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three
years, and begat sons and daughters. 16. And Eber lived four and thirty years
and begat Peleg: 17. And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and
thirty years, and begat sons and daughters. 18. And Peleg lived thirty years
and begat Reu: 19. And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine
years and begat sons and daughters. 20. And Reu lived two and thirty years and
begat Serug: 21. And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven
years, and begat sons and daughters. 22. And Serug lived thirty years, and
begat Nahor: 23. And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and
begat sons and daughters. 24. And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat
Terah: 25. And Nahor lived after he begat Terah and hundred and nineteen years,
and begat sons and daughters. 26. And Terah lived seventy years, and begat
Abram, Nahor, and Haran. (Josh, 24:2)
Shem (100 years old) begat Arphaxad
(who was born 2 years after the flood);.....................................Shem lived 500 more years having
children...
Arphaxad (35 years old) begat Salah;...... Arphaxad lived another 403 years and begat sons and daughters...
Salah (30 years old) begat Eber;.......Salah lived 403 years more and had sons and daughters...
Eber (43 years old) begat......................Peleg; Eber lived 430 years begetting sons and daughters...
.Peleg (30 years old) begat Reu; Peleg lived 209 years having sons and daughters...
Reu (32 Years old) begat Serug;.... Reu lived another 207 years having sons and daughters...
Serug (30 years old) begat Nahor; Serug lived 200 more years begetting sons and daughters...
.Nahor (29 years old) begat Terah; Nahor lived 119 years having sons and daughters...
Terah (70 years old) = Abram, Nahor and Haran...These are the 9 generations from the flood.
27. Now these are
the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nabor, and Haran: and Haran begat
Lot. 28. And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in
Ur of the Chaldees. 29. And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of
Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahors' wife, Milcah, the daughter of
Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. 30. But Sarai was barren;
she had no child. 31. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran
his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they
went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan;
and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. 32. And the days of Terah were two
hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
Terah begat Abram, Nabor, and Haran; Haran begat Lot (Haran died in Ur of the Chaldees.)...Abram took a wife= Sarai (Abram half-sister, for in those days before the Law that God gave Moses it was not a sin to marry relatives.....Nahor took a wife= Milcah whose father was Haran (his brothers daughter.)..
Verses 31 and 32 tells that Terah took Abram his son and his wife Sarai, Lot his grandson, and left Ur of the Chaldees and headed to Canaan. On the way they stopped at Haran, for which purpose it is not stated, but possibly due to the health of Terah who died at 205 there in Haran.
The Road to Salvation (KJV)
Romans 3: 23, 24 “For all
have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by His
grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 5:8 “But God commended
His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
John 3:15 “For God so loved
the world That He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
1 John 4:9”In this was
manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten
Son into the world that we might live through Him.”
John 6: 47, 48 “Verily,
verily, I say unto you He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life.”
Romans 10:9 – 14 “That if
thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine
heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with
the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is
made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on Him shall
not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek;
for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For
whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14. How then
shall they call on him in whom they have not believed: and how shall they
believe in him of whom they have not heard: and how shall they hear without a
preacher?”
II Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed
away; behold, all things are become new.”
If you are not saved, I pray you will
accept Christ as your Savior to day. We are not promised another minute on this
earth. We are but on a journey, passing though this world to the next, and you
have a choice of where you will spend eternity. I pray you choose to spend it
in Heaven with the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit and all those who
believe that Jesus is the Son of God and paid our sin debt for us.
